Illegal dumping is a serious and unnecessary problem in Newfoundland and Labrador that poses a threat to the environment and our community.  Dumping waste in unauthorized areas can pollute our land and water, negatively impact wildlife and result in significant clean-up costs.  There is no excuse for illegal dumping.

If you see something, say something.

Crime Stoppers encourages the public to report information of any suspicious activity involving the improper disposal of waste, including crimes in progress as well as details on illegal dumpsite locations.
Take note of what you see and pay particular attention to the license plate number, colour and make of vehicle,location and time of day.
You will not be asked to provide your name- your anonymity is guaranteed and you will not have to testify in court.

What happens once I report information about an activity involving illegal dumping?

The anonymous information is provided to the appropriate law enforcement agency for further investigation.

If law enforcement uses your information to help solve a crime, you may be eligible for an award of up to $2000.



Why is reporting illegal dumping so important?

The potential environmental impacts of illegal dumping are significant. Illegally dumped materials, such as construction debris, furniture and appliances, propane tanks, cars and other items, can leak contaminates into local ecosystems and harm plants and wildlife.

In addition, illegal dumping encourages more dumping – abandoned garbage such as litter, even small amounts, can quickly accumulate.



What are the consequences for those convicted of illegal dumping?

In accordance with the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Protection Act, fines range from $500 to $10,000 for individuals and from $1,000 to $1 million for corporations convicted of illegal dumping.



Where can I properly dispose of my unwanted items?

Residents and businesses can properly dispose of waste and recyclables using curbside collection services, special collection events and public drop-off locations such as Green Depots, waste management facilities and transfer stations.  Visit ReThinkWasteNL.ca to find everything you need to know about managing your waste.
